Architecture continues to be rooted to its site and bound to its time. The fact cannot be overlooked that the debate surrounding architectural monuments has always played an important role. The monumentalization of architecture and the museification of historical monuments have been inextricably linked since the 18th century. Connected with the term monument is not only one specific architectural technique that would have been lost in Modernism. On the contrary, our current understanding of monumentality as a genuine architectural quality leads directly into the selfimage of Modernism. It is precisely in the synthesis of the representational and the performative that the monumental continues to be relevant and suggests new ways to make architecture.

Heike Hanada studied architecture at the HdK Berlin and at TODAI, University of Tokyo. In 1994, she founded her studio (Hanada+) in Tokyo, and in 2007 in Weimar (heike hanada_laboratory of art and architecture). Today she works as an artist and architect in Berlin. In 2007, her work received international recognition after receiving the 1st prize in an open competition for the extension of the Asplund Library in Stockholm. In 2019, she opened the new Bauhaus Museum in Weimar. Since 2009, Heike Hanada has been Professor for Gestaltung at the FH Potsdam. In 2018, she took over the chair for Building Typologies at the TU Dortmund.
